The “duck”: cheap by day, expensive in the evening

Prices used to be nearly flat during the day. Now solar plants flood the market at midday, and in the evening, when the sun sets but demand is still high, the price jumps. Average prices by time of day:

Monthly reviews

Early October 2026 (1–2 October)

On 1 October Base was about UAH 3,937/MWh (peak hours 08–20: 2,548; the rest of the day: 5,325), with six consecutive hours from 10:00 to 16:00 at the minimum price of UAH 10 as solar plants covered demand. On 2 October Base rose to 4,670 with an evening peak of 12,540.

The ratio of declared purchase to sale fell to 0.56–0.59 (0.63 in September): when supply dominates, prices are usually lower.

September 2026

Average Base was about UAH 5,988/MWh. By decade: 5,749 → 5,976 → 6,240, rising towards the end of the month. The intraday market averaged about 5,948. Purchase-to-sale ratio: 0.63.

August 2026

Average Base was about UAH 5,900/MWh with a large spread between decades: about 7,377 in the first, 7,177 in the second and only 3,377 in the third, driven by weather and the balance of seller and buyer bids.

What drives the price most

Balance of bids

Traded volume itself barely affects the price. What matters is the ratio of declared purchase to sale: the more supply, the lower the price.

Solar generation

Solar plants greatly increase supply by day, so midday hours can be very cheap while evening peaks are expensive.

Weather and season

Summer heat raises consumption (cooling), autumn and winter cold does too. Prices follow temperature and seasonal cycles.
